On June 28, I gave birth to my son Julien at 24 weeks. He is in the NICU at a local hospital. We have had quite an adventure in the past 3.5 weeks. I am so lucky that he is a fighter. I had a loss 2 yrs ago at 23 weeks and it has brought up many feelings. I am feeling so guilty that once again my body rejected my pregnancy. Now my baby boy is on ventilators and already had surgery and is fighting to be alive every day. I was supposed to keep him safe and I couldn't do that. Having a preemie especially a micro preemie is a roller coaster ride. I spend half the day at the hospital and then call every time I pump at night. I am so scared that I will be getting a bereavement box instead of a baby. One positive is he is tolerating his milk feedings he started at 1cc and 6 days later he is already at 6cc. Just need some encouraging words

Jilly423-sorry to hear that you had Julien so early. I will be keeping your family in my prayers that he remains a fighter and continues to do well. What was his weight at birth? I know how exhausting it can be to run to and from the hospital. I am not sure where you are located but a NICU near me had a foundation separate and apart from the NICU that would help with gas money, grocery shopping and a bunch of other services. Here is the information about the one near me because if there isn't one near you maybe they know of one that can help you out. www.haileyshopefoundation.org/Please do not beat yourself up about having him early ((((HUGS))))

Prayers for your little one. Not sure if you are up for reading this yet, but here's a link to what I call "Baby Bennett's Blog" written by the mom of another micro premie... He was born two years ago this month (his birth story is even posted a few blog posts ago). [story with a positive outcome] www.anotherordinarymiracle.com/Hugs to you and your precious Julien... and prayers for him, you, and for all the miracle workers in his NICU who are doing all that they can for your son.

Why do you thinnk your body is in the wrong? Perhaps you are holding onto them as tight as possible, and other factors are trying to take them away? well done for getting this little one to 24 weeks. You've given him the chance, though its hard- at least you did the best you can.

Just wanted to update everyone. Today Julien is 2 months old. Almost 33 weeks He is about 3 pounds 6 oz. he is about 15 inches. He is doing well. He is on a conventional vent now. He was on CPAP for 9 days but his lungs still aren't strong enough for him to stay on it. He is currently up to 1 ounce of breast milk every 3 hours (through his NG tube). At 34 weeks as long as he has no breathing tube we will begin to introduce nipple feedings.
It has been a rollercoaster ride. It's hard to keep myself sane but the nurses and staff are very caring and helpful. Hopefully only 7 more weeks until I bring him home

My Caitie was on a ventilator for a short time. She wasn't a micro preemie, but was born at 34 weeks. That is wonderful that he growing and doing well with the breast milk. Continued prayers for Julien (and mommy) that he will continue to do well and be able to do the nipple feedings and get off the vent for good. Praying, also, that he surprises the doctors and is able to come home before 7 weeks. (((hugs))) Thank you for updating.

Just an update: Julien is 14.5 weeks old (38.5 GA). He is about 7 pounds and 19.5 inches long. We are nipple feeding and have began to latch on to breast. We still need to have hernia surgery and get off oxygen support. We are on nasal cannulas at 1.5L. We will probably stay in the NICU until at the least beginning of November. Wish we were coming home next week but at least I will be coming home with a baby and not a box this time.

So glad to hear that he is on a nasal cannulas nipple feeding. That's wonderful!! I will continue praying for Julien that you'll have great success with the bf'ing and that the hernia surgery will go smoothly without any complications. (((hugs)))

Just wanted to let everyone know that Julien was discharged from the NICU on Tuesday November 13th. After 138 days. He was born 1 pound 9 ounces and was discharged weighing 10 pounds 8 ounces. At the pediatrician visit on the 16th, he weighed 11 pounds 5 ounces. He is a great baby. He sleeps all night and most of the day. When he is awake he loves to cuddle and move around. His head is so heavy so tummy time is difficult for him. We are in the process of applying for Early Intervention.
