What would you do? (Update at bottom 5/31/12)

Well, its been a long time since I have been around these boards so here is a quick update on me...

My boyfriend decided he didn't want anymore kids (he has a son) so after getting more and more depressed and doing some research I decided I am gonna do this on my own. In the quest to find a donor, I had a couple come to me and offer for him to be my donor. There were lots of talks, paperwork drawn up, etc. My obgyn sent me to the RE (which my Ins. should have covered the visit and they DID NOT and I didn't find out til I got there! thats a whole nother story!) RE was super nice and totally fine with me getting pregnant (I am pretty high risk) but dislikes me using a known donor. Long story short, RE told me that I was misdiagnosed with PCOS that I do NOT have it as I only meet one criteria for it and that he believes either my tubes are blocked (HSG is going to be done next cycle finally after all these years) or that its LPD which has been my guess all along as I only have about an 8-10 day Luteal phase. Also, I found out that my docotr when she called me last yr and told me the labs showed I didn't ovulate I actually did and he showed it to me in the computer system! I was very upset by this as this led to quite a lot of disappointment in the fact that we didn't believe I was O'ing on my own. Well, I am..

The RE wants to start me on Clomid next cycle and see if this helps the luteal phase (it didn't before on 50 mgs a couple yrs ago but he starts you at 100mg) and do my HSG, I plan to try 6 cycles with my known donor (sorry doc!) and then move on to IUI with donor sperm from a sperm bank.

Now my current problem is I got my + OPK this morning and did an insem from my known donor and will do one more tomm AM. My RE mentioned we could treat the LPD with Clomid or Progesterone. He said Clomid works better. Do you think its wrong if I call and ask if he would give me progesterone for this cycle since he wouldn;t want me to start it til 3 dpo anyway even though he is not a fan of me using the donor? What would you do? I mean if a miracle happened and I got pregnant well this could save me quite a bit of money before I go through with HSG, etc. next cycle. Or would you just hope for the best and keep things planned as they are?


P.S. I know there are plenty of people who aren't going to agree with my choice to use a known donor but please know this was not an overnight decision and has been well thought out and planned ok.

ive never heard of using clomid to correct a luteal phase defect, only progesterone. but i just did some googling and see some stuff on both! REgardless of which to use, I don't think calling the doctor and asking them to prescribe something for this cycle is out of the question since they already suspect lpd and if it is a tubal blockage it wont harm that. and if the hag shows, you can just proceed as planned with the HSG, etc. good luck hon!

Thanks Ellie, yeah I didn't know at first that Clomid was used either but I believe they believe it will make for a stronger ovulation and thus higher progesterone levels? but I could be wrong. My old obgyn said I could only do one or the other cause I wanted both as I didn't feel the Clomid corrected this but I was only doing 50mg unmonitored at that time. I think I will give his nurse a call tomorrow and see what she says. I can still hope for a miracle in the meantime...

I am not sure what you should do but it couldn't hurt to call the doctor and hope for the best. I hope that you get the results you want leading to that very sticky baby

If the doc won't give you an rx for progesterone, you can use the progesterone cream that you can get at a place like GNC and some health food stores. I took clomid and progesterone to help with LPD and suspected poor egg quality when TTC DS.

My RE had me on Clomid, HCG trigger, and progesterone for the last 2 cycles.... your doctor should not give you a problem. I've asked for the HSG and every month his schedule does not match my cycle and not in town to do. I told him I can't keep trying IUI and hope for the best - especially if my tubes could be blocked - money wasted and too emotional. On my own this cycle.....

i dont think your doctors opinion should impact on the medical care he gives.
I had HSG just in case then feel pg quickly afterwards. apparantly this is common, so its worth a shot. If they see a small blockage they will try to clear it while their if they can, too, here in Oz.

Just an update...
My RE did give me the Progesterone. He actually gave me Crinone and for free! The nurse told me that I shouldn't ever have to buy it cause he has tons of samples of it and considering when I priced it out of pocket its $276 I will definitely take free! I actually ended up starting my period while taking the progesterone but my LP went from 8-9 days to 11 so I guess we are moving in the right direction maybe. However, he decided to not let me do Clomid this cycle as planned so kinda bummed about that. He wants me to have my HSG next week and we will go from there. Kinda sucks though since according to my chart and knowing when I O'd on Clomid in the past it will put my O date for the following cycle the same week my donor will be out of town. So now I have to wait out two more cycles before starting Clomid! I know its really not THAT long but it seems like forever

I am terrified of the HSG. I am just soooooo scared its going to hurt sooooo bad. He told me it might be a lil cramping but shouldn't be anything compared to an Endometrial biopsy which is what I asked him to compare it to. (which I will never have again in my life, I would rather die first it hurt so bad and I still have nightmares to this day about it!) I guess we shall see how this all goes...

My HSG was pretty painful, but it's over pretty quick. Take some ibuprofen half an hour beforehand, that should help.

I have also heard that Clomid causes a stronger ovulation, so it can help with LPD since that should also increase your hormone levels.

Oh and an HSG also has been linked to higher fertility the next few months, so hopefully it will be that way for you! Good luck!

Honestly didn't feel a thing from HSG so can't really say it hurt. I also had a similar thing as an X-ray and though their was a bit of pressure, nothing to really worry about.
I would definitely take pain meds though just to be safe and maybe take a driver with you.good luck

Update: I had my HSG yesterday and have to say I feel sorry for anyone who had horrible pain from theirs cause I had NO pain! I kept asking the nurse "is it gonna hurt now?" Lol then realized they were already running the dye and doing pics. Everything was clear and normal! He said he sees no problem why I shouldnt get pregnant ( umm ok then why not in 9 yrs?) So the plan is as he said take full advantage of this cycle since chances could be a lil higher after HSG then he has already called in my progesterone 200mg capsules for my LP. If this cycle doesnt work then I will start 100mgs Clomid next cycle. A couple weeks ago my donor's son informed me randomly that I am gonna have twin boys next June. Then today he randomly asked me if i had a baby what i would want a boy or girl. I told him it didnt matter I just hope the baby would be healthy. He said "Well, you're gonna have a boy anyway" mind you he is 7 and doesnt have a clue that I am even trying...I hope he knows something I dont At least it gives me a lil hope...
