We have little chickies that hatched over Memorial Day weekend. One of them was injured the other day, and we have been nursing it for several days. Feeding it with an eye dropper, holding it, keeping it warm. I think it was lonely without the other chicks, but we couldn't put it in with the others because they would peck at it.
I thought it was getting better, and Friday I was excited that it was eating on its own, then Saturday morning, it looked terrible. During the day, it became obvious that it wasn't going to make it. So I held it until it died. Just like Weeble. When Weeble was injured (drowned), we took him to the hospital and we were so hopeful that he would make it. Then it became clear that he wouldn't, and all we could do was hold him until he was gone. The chickie had agonal breaths, just like Weeble did. Then it stretched out, I thought it was having a siezure (like Weeble did), and then it was dead.
I've never cried over the death of a chickie like I did last night. Here's what I think: sweet little babies shouldn't die. No matter what kind of babies they are.
