If you rent, are you financially responsible for repairs to the property if you had no responsibilty in causing the damage? What does your lease say about it?

I think that it depends on the situation that caused the damage. If it's wear and tear, natural causes/weather, appliances breaking down, pipes bursting, that sort of thing, then the landlord is responsible to fix it. But if it was caused by negligence in some way, by either you or anyone else that happened to be in the house, then you would probably be responsible for it. Of course, if someone else did it, you could probably get the money out of them if it was extensive damage. Most states have their own laws and regulations for landlords/tenants, so you could probably look online for more detailed information about your situation!

Check with your local Legal Aid office for a copy of landlord tenant laws. When a landlord fails to make repairs rent can also be put in escrow. Not paying rent can cause eviction but if you go through the proper legal channels and put it in escrow you are still paying rent.
