A friend of mine flew today to California (from DC). She will be donating one of her kidneys to her 17 year old nephew who is in kidney failure. This can be a risky procedure for both the recipient and the donor.
Her three young children remain at home in DC... the kids know their mom is doing this, but do not know the risks involved. She is scheduled to be gone for 3-4 weeks for the surgery/recovery.
Please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers. I believe the surgery is scheduled for Monday. (Her name is Jen and I do not remember her nephew's name.)

Laura, Jen is very loving and I'm glad her nephew found a family match. I will pray for the surgery. I was supposed to do it a year ago but DH wouldn't let me b/c of the risk and his desire for me to have another child. It's an act of love and I'm so proud of her. Mari

Update from my friend. She had the surgery in Monday, 12/13:
I wanted to let you know that my surgery went very well. For those of you who missed this, on Monday, I had surgery here in california to donate a kidney to my 17 year old nephew. I am still at [xxxxx] Hospital, but hope to move to an aunt and uncle's tomorrow to recover until next week when they will allow me to travel to my parent's in southern california where [DH] and the kids will show up to celebrate Christmas. I am still in a fair amount of pain, but every day is better, and most importantly, the surgery was a real success. Jake [nephew] is doing fantastic, and my kidney is performing a beyond expectations in its new home! It actually feels miraculous that crazy stuff like this is even possible.
