Today, Kyle, who has ADHD, saw a new psychiatrist. DH was able to come b/c of the holiday. It was a great appt. He was thorough and explained everything to us. DH saw his office and said he has so many degrees/certifications he believes he knows his stuff. He has an MD/Ph.D (in pharmacology) which encourages me b/c Kyle takes meds for his ADHD.
He agrees that Kyle is functioning well academically yet maintains some difficulties in concentration/focus, social skills. We heartily agreed. He recommended two resources, one includes a social skills group w/Kyle's peers!!! We've wanted this for many years but no one knew of one. Also, he recommended a different medication, similar to the one he's on now (Adderall instead of Vyvanse) for greater effectiveness. Finally, we both (Psychiatrist and me) were on board w/him seeing the MFT in the practice. Kyle currently sees a private MFT but he sees Kyle alone and doesn't regularly consult w/us, so we don't know what's happening in therapy. I wanted more of a family counseling session w/parenting tips and ways to help us all talk better and the new MFT agrees it's the best way to practice w/a child. Until now, we had such difficulty finding an MFT who would treat a child w/ADHD Kyle's age, 10. Everyone's practice was for teens. I have met w/her re: my younger son and found her to be practical, inclusive and easy to talk to so I'm excited about her seeing Kyle. It really helps that she is the woman the psychiatrist also recommended. I appreciated his confirmation.
Kyle completed a self-assessment at the psychiatrist's office and he marked that he could always talk to us, we always supported him and we make him feel good about his life. As anyone parenting a child w/ADHD knows, that felt like we were paid a high compliment by our children.
Thanks for reading.
