I'm reading *In Defense of Food, an Eater's Manifesto* by Michael Pollen. I'd love to discuss it with anyone here who might have read it! Pollen writes about the industrialization of food and how contemporary methods of raising food, deplete it of essential nutrients. We also go through so many fads - low fat, low carb, etc. In the meantime, we are fatter and less healthy than we have ever been. We deplete wheat of its nutrients through processing it into white bread, and then think we can just take supplements to make up for a diet devoid of nutrition. What he advocates most of all is eating food that our ancestors would actually recognize as food. I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of all the processed crap in my house.

Candace, I wish that I knew how to eat more healthy. I really should begin doing more research on the subject. It is a major lifestyle change and I feel very overwhelmed by it.

Have you watched Food Inc yet? You might like it. Another good book to start with because it's really simple and straightforward is Food Rules, also by Michael Pollen.

awww, don't beat yourself up, Eve! For me, it's just inspiration. I've read that it's really about what you eat 90% of the time. It's okay to indulge sometimes.

Sounds like a interesting book, I cannot see myself making my own baby food. But Jerry has vowed the next baby will never know what the junk is. The sad thing about the processed it's in the schools. And some of it is designed to make people want more.

it's amazing how much food is processed to remove most nutrition. We've become addicted to refined carbohydrates and sugars, which are sooo bad for us. I love that Jerry wants to make baby food. What I see kids eating in school lunches really horrifies me!

If you can't find that book, Food Rules is also a great read. Some of my fave rules were -
Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.
Don't buy any food with ingredients you can't pronounce.
If it arrives through this window of your car, it's not food.

I'm going to get that when my Kindle comes. I actually have a degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition, so I find those things very interesting.
Mark Kurlansky has a couple of books out about the history of certain foods. I enjoyed "Salt" and "Cod."

Then you might really appreciate "The Omnivore's Dilemma," which really gets into the science of food and the industrialization of everything from feed lots to corn. I'll have to check out Mark Kurlansky - thanks.

Aly, my DH is finishing up his masters in Health Science (he is a bio-chemist) and I have been fascinated w/ his textbooks. I proofread his papers before he sends them off to be graded and I have learned so much about the health of our food and what certain components do to our bodies which results in why we have diff. health problems. Its all connected. Sorry, I'm not scientific so my wording may be off. Candace, the library said the book is rented out and has a waiting list!!! Must be popular! I will look into the others you suggested and Aly suggested. What you said about if it arrives in the window of your car, its not food, LOL!! But so true. I lived off of McD's and ballpark concession food my childhood. It's hard to change, but its so worth it!

Tori, Making your own baby food is actually pretty simple. I have one of those six dollar mini choppers from walmart, and i just take whatever we are having and toss it into the chopper for baby. It is a 30 second job, and far cheaper than the store bought stuff. Plus, it actually has flavor.
