Kyle was diagnosed with ADHD but I think something else is going on. He doesn't seem to understand what he's done wrong much of the time. It's not just that he doesn't agree, it's unclear to him despite our explanations. He makes the same errors 3 or more times in a day.
Example, he likes to watch TV. I told him he may not watch TV for 1 week b/c he has become very upset when told to stop watching it. Several times during the course of his punishment, he turned on the TV; I had to explain that he'd lost his privilege. He became so angry he shouted disrespectful comments so I sent him to his room. Less than an hour later, DH found him playing outside. He explained he was bored. I sent him back to his room, and an hour later he was watching a movie in his room. Still later was sent outside to do his chores--take out the garbage--and DH found him down the street with his younger brother watching the children play.
DH and I even talked with him about specific behaviors he needs to start or engage in. And we wrote them down on a chart we monitor and he can monitor on the frig. We specifically listed his attitude when given a parental directive and rules for the TV. This is why his behavior confounds us--we identified it and wrote it down, plus he stated he understood and was able to parrot it back to us.
I am at the point of thinking that he needs to be re-evaluated by a psychiatrist. ADHD is impulsive and can be clueless, but he's really clueless and it's frustrating us as parents.
