Need some major help figuring out what this means

I received a call from Sophia's teacher today. She said that she has been noticing how Sophia will not use here feet. For example, you put her on a trike, and she will not even try to pedal. Or push toys, or used those plactic cars where they propel with their feet. She just can't figure out how to do that. So she wants to reevaluate her on this area.

Also, she is starting to pull her hair out on occasion. One strand at a time. I don't get that. I talked to her teacher today about that and she feels she is having sensory issues. And she still is licking on occasion. Anything and everything. It is rather gross, yet I don't know how to stop it. The teacher again said this all sounds like sensory issues.

So what happens from here? Is it like it was before where they come in and evaluate her in each category. Or do they only evaluate the areas of concerns? What about sensory issues? What exactly is that and how do they accomodate that?

I have been very depressed about this lately. Well depressed from this and other things going on in my life. I worry that she won't ever get better. I can deal with that, but how do I shield her from rude ignorant people and their nasty comments? I get that all the time now because she is a runner. And she doesn't always use her speech. She ran away from me at Walmart once, and I had to chase her down. By the time I reached her, she was already out into the parking lot. That was the last time. Now I leash her for lack of better words. And people are so out and out mean and nasty with what they say about that.

This is the way God made her, and that is perfect for him and for me. I just worry soooooo much about her future.

Yes they will come out and evaluate every area of need. For the sensory issues they will do sensory and OT for the not using her feet that is an OT/PT skill and she will do okay once she gets therapy.

I know its hard so very hard to see our kids struggle.

Her pulling of hair if a new behavior could be behavioral based as well.

I hear the sadness in your post. I've been there many times and I'm sure I'll be there many more times. People are for the most part stupid!!! I really want to write a book. The goofy looks we get because Jesse can't "talk" are amazing.... and now he spells words on a laminated paper with the ABC's...that really freaks them out.

Sophia is your sweet baby and you said it..God made her this way and it is his version of "perfect" for us. It took me so long to accept that and most days I still don't want to.....
For the record, Jesse just turned 6 and he could never push those cars or pedal a tricycle and so what.....He has motor planning issues so they tell me....it is another label. I'm so sick of labels. He has so many but I've learned to not let them bother me......it actually helped him get services that he needed...most of all a 1 on 1 aide in school to help him through things.
I believe all the things that are going on with him are brain related. Running is a tough one....(Jesse can't run). I think that safety is first nomatter what prying eyes think......

Sensory issues can be so different but there are great things out there that can help. I've seen kids recently in the store with earphones (the big ones) to block out the sound).
I hope that you can find things that will help her feel better.

Ok so I don't know your background sorry. But I am a special education teacher & I am the parent of a 6 year old boy with Aspergers Syndrome (autism spectrum). If she is diagnosed as Developmental Delay & they are just testing areas again they will most likely do the DD scales again (all 5 areas, but they don't have to if it has been in the past yr or 2). They will not have to redo interview or speech or anything else unless they feel new information will help better diagnosis or treat him properly.

Sensory issues can be a variety of different things & different way to treat. My son being on the autism spectrum has sensory issues (needing deep pressure touches to help calm down, he has the need to chew, ect). This is treated through OT evaluation & the OT can develop a sensory diet (ides of what to do & how often throughout the day) and/or can specifically work on sensory issues with your child so many times a month. Some sensory issues kids will grow out of, some will just change the way the respond & some just learn appropriate ways to cope with sensory needs.

I hope this helps some. I can go on for miles about sensory because I specialize in working with children on the autism spectrum & every child with autism can benefit from sensory input. I am a big sensory nut lol. I can never learn enough about it.
