Evelyn had an abnormal sleep deprived EEG on Tuesday. We went directly to the Dr. after the test and he told me it was abnormal and that during the strobe light portion of the test, she was visibly seizing on the left side. He increased her depakote to depakote er, 750 mg per day from 500 mg per day that she took 1/2 in the morning, and 1/2 at night. Now she just takes the 750mg every morning. He said to bring her back in 2 wks for labs, then see him in 4 months assuming all is going well. My question is...shouldn't he have told me what side of the brain is affected, what type of seizures she is having, etc? Her background is that she was diagnosed with partial-complex seizures when she was 6 that kept up until she was eventually diagnosed with epilepsy at 7. HOWEVER, all prior EEG's were read as normal, which I was told isn't that uncommon even in kids with epilepsy. I guess I am just confused....and should she have an MRI or anything? I thought once you had an abnormal EEG they did an MRI? She has had several MRI's in the past and prior brain surgery for a brain malformation. I was so sleepy at our apt the other day and so shocked that the test was abnormal, I totally forgot to ask the important stuff That's what happens when mom and daughter have been up all night and it is after noon before the testing is finished and results read Well, any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

My sister had petit mal seizures when she was younger..they never told us what part of the brain was affected just what to do to help.... I guess you could ask...Definately ask if you felt like you were rushed through! Sometimes doctors do forget that you arent one too and dont explain things as thoroughly as you need them to.

I would definitely call and ask your questions. Maybe he allows parents to email questions? You may find that better to be able to write out your questions so you don't forget. I know how hard it is to think of questions when being dealt this news. Good luck

EMAIL EMAIL EMAIL!!!!! They work for you!!!! We have had lots of bad results with neuros with B...just keep shopping until you find one you like! Many do understand that 'sleep depived' means the mama too and won't mind if you call with questions. B just yesterday had his last dose of Depakote..it never really worked for us.I only know about B but was the seizure on the left side of her BODY? If so I would think it's the right side of her brain. Does that in any way corelate to her previous surgery or MRI's? I wish you luck and keep us updated... xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo me
