Interact:
Interact is a program of affirmation and education for families who have children with communication delays.
1) Serves families in the Duluth region who have infants, toddlers, or preschoolers with communication delays.
2) Is a group of 4-6 families meeting together with speech pathologists for two hours a week for six weeks.
3) Allows parents to share their concerns and ideas with other parents facing the same experiences.
4) Explains information to parents about communication development.
5) Uses small group discussions, demonstrations, parent-child play times, and video taping to provide parents with practical suggestions for helping their child's language growth.
6) Gives individualized direction from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association certified speech language pathologists and student interns.
7) helps parents network with community resources.
8) Provides a light meal for the entire family.
9) Provides child care for siblings.
10) Is free of charge to families because it is funded by the Edwin Eddy Foundation.
11) Has various specialized focus groups throughout the year.
This is from the flyer for the Interact program we are now enrolled in. It will begin on Oct 30th. I am looking forward to it and hoping it will help. The speech therapist that did Sophia's evaluation referred us into this program. Has anyone ever heard of it or been through it before? I am so hoping it helps.

I asked a lady in our church this weekend if she has been through the Interact program. She has a son that is developmentally delayed. He's a teenager now.
Anyhow, it sounds pretty cool. She asked if it was at UMD, which it is. Then she said it is interns and speech pathologists. They meet with me and DH, and they teach us some communication techniques, then they put you in a room with the two way mirror in it, and they film you as you play with your child. The following week, they go over the tapes with you and tell you what you do right, and how you can improve. I'm more excited than I was before. Then at the end of the sessions, they send you home with the video tapes so you have them for reference.
I'm very glad we have the opportunity to go through this program. I wish it was more widely available. I figure nothing can hurt at this point, and it sounds like it might help quite a bit.

We went to our first session of Interact last night. It was wonderful.
First we met in a group with the other parents. They talked over all the ways to use playtime as a time to encourage your child to talk. Gave us all the pointers, etc.
Then they took us to a room with a two way mirror system and a camera set up. The therapist went and brought Sophia into the room and modeled some of the techniques we had just gone over in group session.
Next it was our turn. We went into the room with Sophia and did our best to use the techniques we were given. This time, we were video taped. When this was over, they brought Sophia back to the other room, and brought us into the room with the VCR. Then she went over everything we did right, and what we could improve on. At the end of the course in 6 weeks, we get to keep the videotape for reference.
I'm so excited. She had her first day with her teacher on Tuesday. I was able to read the report. Sounded like she did okay. I am praying that this works for her and she's able to catch up.

awesome
the best book to help you with this as well is the language of toys
it shows you have to take a normal toy and interact and build speech with your children amazing book.
I bought it prior to my son's birth and sadly he died prior to us using it but I have used it over the years with so many children.
and since your daughter is 2 label everything it will help her and even help the older ones learn as well.
Like a notecard taped to the table and than say the word whenever you sit there or pass by like the door.
Sophia we are going in the d o o r and sound it out.
Let's go eat at the t a b le
