The school called yesterday. It has been such a crazy silly few weeks, almost unbelievable. I was at the hospital when she called right in the middle of Jaydon's sweat test. Anyhow, they're writing her an IEP and will have them in the mail. Then next week I sign the rest of the papers and they go over everything, and she finally gets help. I'm half relieved. Now if I can just get the rest of her medical stuff under control. We'll be doing good. Sounds like she'll get services through the school district at least through age 3. She said she qualified both under 2 and under 3. I don't quite get what that meant, but I'll be asking at our big meeting next week. It is scheduled for Thurs. Lisa

You mean they are sending you a draft, right? The IEP should be finalized and signed with the whole committee, including you, together.
In my school system, we serve preschool kids ages 3 to 5. After that, they are considered school age and are served through school age programs.
Hope all goes well and you are pleased with her services. Hope things settle a bit in your family too. Sounds like a lot going on.

Yes. They are sending me a draft. That is correct. She said I would have that and then her and all the teacher's come out and we go over anything. Then she'll get help.
I know she said she qualified for 2 and 3. I still don't quite get that. She said she might not need it at age 3. All questions I have to write down before they come. The help we'll receive is through the school district somehow, and they actually come to our house to do it. I'll be finding out much more later. I'm just glad we've got this far. It's a relief just to have the evaluation part over.
Sophia has some other things going on and these past few weeks have been extremely trying for our family. I'm sure you know how that goes. Always running, back and forth to appointments. Juggling, family, medical problems, school, work, etc. Just feeling a little bit........tired out.
Anyway, it is the draft she said she'd put in the mail.

The IEP is good for a year, then you will meet again and talk about where she is and what services, if any, she needs. You can meet before the year is up if changes need to be made.
No big, there is a whole other process that you will know about if they think she no longer needs services. There shouldn't be any surprises.
At this age, kids change so fast you just can't make any predictions about what the future will hold.
I teach the three year olds. Too bad I can't get her, LOL ;D

It would be cool if you could have her.
The lady that I spoke with on the phone said that she does have skills, she's just not using them appropriately. So I'm sure she can do more, I just don't know how to make her. She walked late too. The ped taught us how to use an excercise ball and we did physical therapy with her and then once she was finally up and moving, there's no stopping her. ;D
If I could ever figure out the scanner on my mom's computer, I would post a picture of her. She has big dark brown eyes like mine that everyone just seems to fall in love with.
A special thank you to you for helping me get through my questions as I work my way through this process. Its a lot of hard work.

It is like learning a whole new language. And it is hard for me too when I am on the other side of the table, as a mother. Sometimes kids just try harder and do more at first for a "stranger" than they will for their loving momma. I bet you will see amazing things happen for her

We had her big meeting today. I thought it went well. She has qualified for services in the birth to three program as well as the 3-5 program. She turns 3 in June, so they'll do the switch then. I am so relieved to have this part over with. They also are enrolling our family in both Interact and Parents and Children Communicating which are free services to help us learn how to help her. I'm excited to begin. Wish they could start tomorrow, but she won't start until Oct 28th. Thanks, Lisa

I'm so happy for your family ;D Will she be going to a class or getting services at home? I hope you are pleased with her program. It stinks having to wait.
I felt bad for my students' parents who finally got through the whole process last May and then had to wait till August for placement because of summer break.

She will receive her services in the home until she's 3 at which time, she'll be going to the headstart center which is in one of our elementary schools. She turns 3 in June so she'll end up with the summer off. If she had turned 3 says in September, the birth to three program does not break for the summer, but what can we do. I'm hoping she starts chattering up a storm. She does talk some. Just very little. Some of what she does say, most people would not understand. She can say juice, go, she said "don't tease" once, baby, up, welcome (which is her thank you. , she never says thank you, just welcome), no, she trys to say Brandon, she trys to say Livy, she does say Becca from time to time. She can talk some, its just not anywhere near the level she should be at. The assured me at the meeting that she's so smart. That made me feel good. That her cognitive skills were very high for a child with language delays. She whipped through the puzzles and stuff. She likes the stuff she can do alone. She doesn't like the stuff she has to do with someone else. That was an area that they said she has goals for. Have you ever heard of the Edwin Eddy Foundation? I hadn't but that is who gives the grants for the Interact program we are now enrolled in. I hadn't ever heard of this stuff before. Have you ever heard of Interact? I'm not sure what to expect. I hate not knowing what to expect. TIA Lisa

I haven't heard of Interact or Edwin Eddie.
She sounds a lot like my students. We have been all special ed, but next year we will blend with HeadStart. Not sure what to expect with that.
I will say that it seems like most of my students spend the year after they turn three just soaking it all up, and not really talking much and then when they come back after the summer break really explode. (I get them when they turn three and get to keep them for an extra year if their birthday falls after Aug 31) It is so exciting, and they are so excited to finally be talking and able to express themselves and categorize things. It will be interesting to see if having typically developing kids in the class speeds that up at all.
If she has a few words now, I bet by the time she hits 3 and half or so she will really take off. The beautiful thing is that with early intervention, many of my kids end up in regular classes by elementary school.
