I was excited to hear her say that familes with "Special Needs" will have a voice in Washington.
Her 4 month old has Down's Syndrome. I think she is in tune with it and I am excited about the possibility of someone who really "gets it"
What do you all think?

I'm excited about that, also! The Down's Syndrome mom's network was buzzing the morning her selection was annouced. I work in the disability field, I'm not a parent of a disabled child, but it could open some new doors. I go to DC on a regular basis, to advocate for appropriate disability legislation, and could quickly list those Congressmen and Senators who believe that disability is a non-partisan issue.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Melody, I hope you don't mind me jumping in here!! There is just something about Palin that I like. I didn't know that her baby had Down's. It will be a wonderful thing to have a mother with a special needs child fighting for their rights!!! I am pro-life and I think one of the things that appealed to me was the number of children she has and the fact that her 17 yr old daughter is pregnant. That helps me to believe she's not for abortion.

I have to respectfully disagree, ladies.
She really bothers me. The whole story of her labor and delivery with her premature, high-risk pregnancy seems irresponsible at best.
I would like to know more about what her family is doing to help Trig reach his full potential. Her comments sounded to patronizing to me. Like when people talk about God giving people a child with special needs as a special blessing, and how much they can learn from that child. Maybe I misunderstood, but that kind of talk doesn't wash with me. I hope we will hear more about how she "gets it", and what issues specifically she wants to address.
I am anti-abortion, like most people, and am all for education and efforts to support women make other choices besides abortion, but I don't believe it is the government's duty or right to take that choice away. Most pro-choice people feel this way. She has said she is against abortion in all circumstances-rape, incest, mother's health, baby's health. I just can't agree with that, and it scares me to think that this country might move in that direction.
BTW, with my fourth pregnancy I had to make the choice about would I "terminate" if she had Downs (we were told there was a 1 in 10 chance that she would) I decided that I could not end the pregnancy for that reason. She was our child and we do everything in our power to help her. I also came to the conclusion that I could not make that decision for anyone else.
Again, I am just expressing my opinion as posters before me did.

I'm just happy that someone is actually addressing the issue in the campaign. In learning about McCain, I also read that he has an autistic grandson. Just having "special needs" close to them is a plus for all of the families who live this very challenging life and walk a hard road every single day! It is a huge struggle to try and provide for a special needs child when government is not very concerned about it and money is always being taken away for services that our children need to thrive and reach their full potential. I have a 4 year old who has been labeled with many different things... Just knowing that there is hope for the future with a candidate that is even familiar with the terms is exciting. I don't know how it will unfold but it gives me great promise!

Also have to add that I have seen the other major candidate speak, and he does talk about having plans for improving education for everyone, including Early Childhood Education. His girls might not have special needs, but he has his eye on the ball.

and please remember she did cut sped funding in alaska by 62% the per pupil for 2008 budget is a mere 28,000 per student not a whole lot if the child has autism, diabetes or a feeding tube.
Yes the new budget does plan to increase it to 78,000 by 2011 but many states are at 125,00 per pupil per year right now.
She also believes in segregation not mainstream and she talks of hubby keeping the kids in alaska while shes in the white house how is that on hands parenting.

I will be glad when she is interviewed without a script, so we can find out what is real and what is rumored. There is so much flying around on the internet, most of it undocumented. I know this isn't the place to get partisan, and I'm certainly not trying to do that. All I can say is it is so important for everyone to research the candidates, and get out and VOTE!

I agree. Even if all you do is go back and look at news footage from Anchorage TV stations and newspapers during the past year or so, there is some scary stuff that I hope will be explained.

www.factcheck.org may be a good place to get started on (or continue) your research, if you ladies are interested. There is an article about the rumors running rampant about Sarah Palin (as well as articles addressing rumors about Obama, McCain, and Biden), and it clearly states that she did NOT cut funding for special needs children.

I liked alot of thing about her. I am very happy to see she is supportive of her daughter, that is a BIG plus for me seeing as I was a teen parent. I don't believe in abortion and personally would not do it for any reason. I DONT agree with her family staying in Alaska and her going to the White house, ummm thats wrong in my book. I don't know, I am leaning towards McCain.
