Time
On the cold gray sidewalks and icy streets, I watch the mass of humanity going on with their lives, and I wonder how. Yet, there was a time when I walked in ignorance with them, self-absorbed in the business of living. Time only dictated when to get out of bed, meetings, appointments, and that favorite TV program on Wednesday night. It announced the rising of the sun and when it set, and yet I never realized it could also mark the end of life, while that life was still being lived.
The single rotation of the second hand passes without notice when we laugh, it’s the cause of frustration when we stand in line, but it drags when we grieve. We endure time when we are suffering, it becomes our enemy. Each passing minute must be endured to the next, followed by another, then another. We survive time, count it off in tears and pain as it passes.
Not only do we grieve the loss of those we love in time’s crushing embrace, but also, in what we were before the passing. The blissful ignorance of merely living, to the truth of what it means to be human, from the fool who wasted the precious increments of time, to the stunning realization that only time is immortal.
We are left wondering if we should fling open the windows to shout a desperate warning to the world below. Would anyone really listen? Or must we hang over the jaws of mortality to understand the real value of time, and how much we have to lose in ignoring this constant in our lives.
With the end of ignorance, time teaches us that life is a matter of choice. Choose to treat each day as if it were the last, opt for love without limits, decide to take a dream and make it the passion of your life. This time is ours, and whatever time remains let it be in the pursuit of a positive contribution to humanity that stands the test, and the immortality of time.
