So, really we are FINALLY after what will be 14 days in the hospital getting released! It's a great feeling, not only because I can sleep in my own bed (the beds here for parents to sleep on STINK...but it could be that I am 21 weeks pregnant with twins and feel like the friggin goodyear blimp....) but it's also, and more importantly means Gabe has made great progress....it's a wonderful feeling.
Gabriel had PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) it's a short blood vessel that connects the main one. "It's function is to allow blood to bypass the lungs, because oxygen for the blood comes from the mother and not from breathing air. In full-term babies, the ductus arteriosus closes shortly after birth, but it frequently stays open in premature babies." The medication that he was on (indomethacin) which is the most common wasn't working and I began noticing a blue tint to his lips and nail beds. So...here we are....
A little more about my son: Gabriel was born at 31 weeks. It was an interesting, stressful and long road to where we are now, and a road I'd rather not revisit...EVER. Gabriel is deaf, actually we are finding out more and more behind the cause of that. Though it's still undetermined at this point.... Aside from the PDA he has anemia which is easily treated....or not (it depends on his mood) we are still sleeping with a monitor....though the number of alarm sounds has greatly decreased. I feel like I could sit here and type for hours about the past 6 months. Anyway, no need for that...I don't have the energy right now. But....That's my boy!

Yeah for the jail break! Both of my twins had PDA surgery. Bridget could not take the indomethicin because it may cause preforations of the bowel, and she already had one, and Em took two rounds before we stopped because we got scared when Bridget had the perforation, so we opted for the PDA ligation. Obviously they were still in NICU (only 2 and 3 months of age). I am so glad he is coming home! How exciting for you. And twins on the way!!!!! We've had long stays in the hospital post surgery, and they are no fun. I cannot imagine being pregnant with twins too-and you are right-those beds are awful lol. I always sleep in the beds with the child, pending no wires or the first night post surgery. Yeah for Gabriel. I never knew who was more excited to go home form the hospital most, me or the kiddo (I think me though lol). Go home, take a bath, and enjoy your night tomorrow! Laura
