Allie had speech today. I asked if it was common to see both the receptive and expressive delays together without something underlying. She said it was not common at all. Not unheard of though, because she has another kid that is like that.
She said she is not so concerned that there is something bigger we are missing (except for maybe hearing, but we will find out next week) because Allie shows little cognitive delay. She does not think Allie is anywhere near ASD. She said usually if it is just dyspraxia, then the expressive is delayed, but the receptive is not. She said usually if it is just auditory processing disorder, then receptive is delayed, but expressive is not.
So it looks like our possibilities are:
1. a hearing problem that is causing the delay
or
2. dyspraxia and APD combined - which is rare, but that just seems to be how Allie is
or
3. ideopathic developmental delay
She also said it is somewhat of an unknown because these things usually don't even get diagnosed until the child is 3 or so.
So while we still don't have answers, I have less of a weight on my shoulders that there is something big we are missing. I suppose it is still possible, but we are getting the EI eval next month, so that is like a second opinion.
I am still really hoping that they will say next week that she is having hearing problems . . . That just seems the most fixable.
Right now our treatment plan is to continue ST every week until Stacy goes on maternity leave in December. Then she will send us home with extensive home program work. We will come back in for follow-up when she gets back from maternity leave and HOPEFULLY we will be able to be released . . .
ETA: I forgot. One thing that she said that made me feel good was that Allie had one really good thing going for her - her attention span is longer than typical for her age. Apparently that is a good indicator.
