I guess Sydney belongs here, although I don't think of her stuff as unique any more, it's become our routine. She has a port-wine stain on her left cheek.
We went through worry at the beginning, until they ruled out Sturge-Weber Syndrome. The worst doctor I have ever met, was the one that came in the morning after she was born. He said "I guess you're wondering about her birthmark? Well, we need to watch it, because it can be associated with a syndrome that includes mental retardation." What a way to introduce the topic. Thankfully, my pediatrician is much better.
Every 3 to 4 months, we travel 5 hours to one of THE places in the US to treat birthmarks. They use general anesthesia to put her out and they do laser surgery. For about 2 weeks after, her birthmark is a darp purple/black. People stare and whisper about her, but I refuse to make her stay inside because of it.
We also go to a pediatric opthamologist every 6 months to have her eye checked. The increased blood vessels around her eye makes her at higher risk for developing glaucoma.
Thankfully, we deal with the same insurance charges on a routine basis....so I've pretty much figured out where the hang-ups will come. The hospital is also great at waiting on our insurance to pay.
The other resulting issue with her is that she is terrified of doctors. I don't even let the pediatrician give her vaccinations, because I want that visit to be a pleasant one. We do shots at the Health Department.
