I've been with SG for quite a while but haven't been active on the board for a while.
My name is Heather Anne and after dealing with infertility and starting testing, we were blessed with our first child. Our pregnancy was great but the deliver was really, long and difficult. Joshua was eventually born by C-section and was in distress. I wasn't able to see him for three hours after his birth as they worked on him.
Joshua seemed healthy and grew pretty well but by 6 months he wasn't able to hold his head up. He wasn't able to roll or sit up so we had him evaluated at the pediatrician's request. He qualified for services through Early Intervention.
Since that time he's had a year of physical therapy and five years of speech therapy. He's been tested for a variety of things including autism and Aspberger's. He shows traits of these but isn't considered on the Autism spectrum. However, he does have ADHD, ODD, generalized anxiety disorder and explosive anger something-or-other. After a long time of consideration and interventions, we decided to put him on medication. He's on Focalin and Resperidal and it has done wonders as we continue to teach him how to respond in situations.
After a rough kindergarten year in the public school setting, I'm homeschooling him this year. It is going well but we have lost the speech therapy services since the local school district doesn't recognize homeschooling as a private school.
I'm still learning a lot about my son, services available and my self... We have tough days and we have incredibly good days. I thank the Lord for my special blessing. However, there are days I need a shoulder to cry on and some gentle encouragement. I hope to offer that to each one on this board.
Love & Prayers,
Heather Anne
PS -- I should add that I have two younger daughters who are typical as far as I know. Ellie is four and Maggie is 1 1/2.
