My dh and I are so bummed. We're trying not to fret about this, but its very discouraging to us.
We have been on sabbatical from ministry for about 8 months now. My dh has been working two jobs (one as a machinist on an aircraft carrier that is being built and one as a church janitor) and just has not been making enough money to make ends meet. We've not only gone further and further into debt every month, but we've even had to eat out of food banks on several occasions.
He was originally promised tons of overtime by the first job when he took it. He later found out that he should never have been promised that.
We've been praying for direction from God and finally received peace about a direction for us to go back into missions (which means moving, but not until spring).
Right after we made the decision to step out, he got word that he was going to get tons of overtime until the end of January. DH was the first to volunteer from his dept. for it (he'd been asking for overtime for months now). Only one other guy volunteered and then another one had to be convinced to take the overtime. It literally meant over $10K above his pay during the next 10 weeks. We were so excited! This meant that we'd be able to pay off several of our loans, hospital bills and taxes...it would basically enable us to go back into missions almost debt-free.
The overtime started Monday. Last night dh found out that they only need two workers so they're letting dh go back to his regular shift because the other two guys both had seniority. The one that had to be convinced to take it originally doesn't even need the overtime. He'd been at the company over 43 years and has (according to him) hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings (from past overtime and all). But because he had decided he wanted to buy his wife a new car with cash (instead of dipping into his savings) for Christmas, he did not back down on taking the overtime. So dh is out of the extra hours as of Friday.
Not only do we have a new baby and were finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, but my dh had considered this man (who claims to be a Christian) his friend. So he's hurt because of that too.
Please pray that this man (his name is Odem) will be convicted and voluntarily let my dh have the overtime. Thank you.
