I thought I would pass along some information I learned recently.... One day in August my sister and I went to one of those nail shops at our mall, run by the Asian nail artists. We both had gel nails put on and we loved them b/c they made our nails look so lovely! ;D I figured I would only keep them for a month or two b/c I was ttc but the next couple of times that I went to get them filled in, I tried out different Asian nail salons in our area to see which I liked better. I noticed that all of them wore masks when filing down my nails and even applying the gel. They would wear them the entire time!! My third time to get fills, I choose a local shop owned by a girl my sister went to school with. She gave me some alarming information. She said that some of the nail stuff that they use in those shops causes birth defects.....especially the acrylic nails b/c they use a dental grade acrylic. That is why they wear the masks when they work on you YUCK! I have stopped going to those shops and now only go to the girl I memtioned above. She does not wear a mask and uses only non-acetone polish remover in her shop. She said she's not about to endange her own health let alone clients! So if you get your nails done, this is something to think about. Lola

There are low-odor nail salons that are safer. Probably like what your friend was talking about. I occassionally get a pedicure at a low-odor salon and it's so nice!

I am a nail addict & go every two weeks & then once a month for a pedicure - - - - I asked my Ob/Gyn about this & about dying my hair when we first found out we were pregnant. The only thing that she said (& she is STRICT about a LOT of other stuff) is that if the smells make you nauseous you don't need to be around them. My salon has a special ventilation unit anyway & you can't smell any chemicals when you walk in. & re: my hair she suggested that # 1 I make sure that smell wasn't going to make me sick & #2 pg can change your body chemistry & the color that worked perfectly last month could look awful the next time . . . that part came true the month after we lost Piglet (I didn't dye during the pg at all) & at my first time back afterward the color I always got turned out WAY too light & we had to do it 3 times to get it right. Not getting my hair dyed at all next time!
