So I'm just wondering, My doctor put me on metformin and clomid this month and many of you ladies who have been on metformin said you had horrible stomach cramping and loose bowels. While I did have massive dizzy spells and hot sweats, I did not experience any of "those" symtoms in the slightest. Does that mean that its not a high enough dossage or that its not working? any insight would be appreaciated. thanks Liz

Hi Liz, Me RE put me on 1500mg of metformin last year (no ramping up, just started there) and I had no side effects. We eventually bumped up to 2250 mg, and I still didn't have side effects. I was weaned off it near the end of my first trimester. Then, about a month after we lost Ian, he put me back on, starting right out at 2250 mg again. I had one day of side effects (diarrhea), but other than that, I've been fine. I think I must have a cast iron stomach or something. In any case, I believe that 1500 mg is considered the lowest effective dose for women with PCOS, and many end up at 1700-2000 mg. Some, like me, go even higher. However, side effects or the lack of them does not indicate if the meds are working. Like I said, I didn't have them, and yet my bloodwork indicates that it is working! Good luck to you!

My endo started me at 500 mg a day and then bumped it up until I now take 2000 mg. a day. It took a couple of weeks to get there. As I shared previously, I lost Tommy when I went off of the Metformin. I now never go off of it. I stayed on it for my entire pregnancy and bf'ing with Sarah. Will your insurance cover you going to an endocrinologist? He will probably put you on a higher dosage. But praise God you haven't experienced any of the side effects!!! lol I wish it were that easy for me (at the beginning).

thanks ladies, DawnN, In canada everything is covered, everyone has health insurance and the doctors take everyone so I'm sure if we had a endocrinologist it would be covered.. However I have never heard this term before, could you tell me what kind of doctor he is? thanks Liz

He's a specialist who deals with everything from Thyroid issues to Diabetes issues. My endocrinologist is the one who actually did all the testing for me (Glucose levels, etc.) for PCOS. He deals more specifically with your endocrinology systems (which control everything from your reproductive systems, metabolism, etc. etc.). I've just had too many obgyn's that did "guessing" games when it came to treating my infertility (trying different drugs...not properly testing....). I never had any success with them, until I went to an endocrinologist first, who got my systems regulated. Then I saw an ob that worked with him and put me on clomid to help "jump start" things once I was "regulated".
Hoping and believing with you for a BFP.
(((HUGS))), Dawn

I just have to say that you are SOOOOO lucky that you are not having symptoms!! When I was put on the Metformin/Clomid combo, my tummy was NOT happy at all!! I had horrible symptoms, not only cramping & bm issues, but the Clomid made me VERY emotional as well!!
I only did the combo for 6 months, it wasn't working, even with the 4 IUI's so my doc decided to stop torturing me! We ended up getting pg on our own, after we found an awesome adoption agency & started saving up $$$ for that!!
Best of luck to you!! Audra

Hi Liz,
Consider yourself lucky that you do not have major smptoms.....they are absolutley no fun, esp when you are at work! My doc said when you have stomache problems, it's because your blood sugar is out of wack. I did not have high blood sugar and am just on 1000mg, but even that made me sick for at least 6 weeks. Now I am fine. Without met, I rarely O'ed. On Met, I'd O anywhere between day 31-60. With Met and Clomid combo, I O'ed on Day17! GL and I sure hope this is your answer.
BTW, you daughter is adorable!
