 IUI Success rate?
« Thread Started on Nov 3, 2005, 2:29pm »

Just wondering if anyone on here had a IUI and got pregnant?

My doctor wants DH and I to do this with a cycle of clomid for a couple of cycles.

We aren't going to do it right now and have decided that in a year if we aren't pregnant, we will go forward with an IUI.

I'm just wondering if anyone here had this procedure done. Did it hurt? Did it work? How many times did you have it done?

Thanks in advance.

LENDY ;D

Lendy,
We did IUI with injectibles and it worked the first time for us.

It doesn't hurt but it's certainly a different experience. I did have some mild cramping afterwards but it was from the ovulation pain.

Good luck! I hope something works for you soon!!

Lendy,
I had an IUI with Jack and it worked the first time. With this pg I got pg the first time as well. I did not use clomid I used injectibles and had 2 iui with each cycle. With Jack I had a little cramping but with this pg I had no cramping at all. I have a hard time getting pg the old fachion way took two years with Jack befora an IUI. I hope you get pg when you are ready and I say give it a try you never know.

I got pg on my second clomid IUI and miscarried and then on my 3rd injectibles IUI and miscarried at 16 weeks :'( Then got pg again on my 6th (!!!) IUI with injectibles with my twins who are now almost 22 months old. It didn't hurt -- some post procedure cramping and was alot less $$$ than IVF. Plus, my RE didn't think we needed IVF...so, we just kept plugging along. Personally, I hated clomid (it made me cuckoo) but the injectibles and IUI did the trick for us. Good luck, L

We did clomid 50mg cd 2-6 followed by IUI once and it worked!

Prior to that I had one m/c and ttc afterwards for more than 1.5 years. We had infertility testing done and nothing was found, but we continue to get BFNs month after month. I was charting, we had good timing each month, but nothing was happening.

My re suggested clomid and IUI. He hoped that the clomid would boost my ovulation giving us either multiple eggs or a "better" egg. "Better target", was what he called it. I asked about clomid alone, but he said that as an re he hadn't had much success with that. (Of course as an re he sees many folks with serious infertility problems who have to do x number of IUI's before they can move on to IVF, etc.) IUI was also used because clomid can dry up your CM.

The IUI itself was not painful for me. The cervix is pretty open at the time of O, which is when the IUI takes place. For me it was like an annual exam (pap, etc). Afterwards I just lay around for a bit (10 mins I think) and then went on with my day to day life. Of course the 2ww was excruciating!

Best wishes,
Andrea

Artificial Insemination worked for us. I was on 100mg of Clomid cd 5-9 when I got pregnant with our son Chance. It didn't really hurt. My cervix had already closed up somewhat but they dilated it and inseminated me, that made me a little more crampy feeling.

I say give it a try when you are ready. It definately cost alot less that IVF. And the clomid never made me feel any different. Good luck!

I had one IUI after (4 failed rounds of Clomid) taking CLomid CD5-9 and then repronex injections CD9-13, then a trigger shot followed by the IUI 36 hours later. It HURT to get the cervix spread (in retrospect I actually o'd later so cervix was closed.) open. The IUI was painless. That was 12/05 (it failed). We'll do another one in February.

The mix of meds caused 2 cysts (the 2 follies we were trying to fertilize turned into cysts, but I did show evidence of Oing later) so we can only do the procedure every other month.

Does anyone know what IUI and injectibles cost in Canada??? I think that's our next step if the next 2 cycles on the clomid alone don't work........no insurance coverage for infertility unfortunately?

TIA!!

We got pg on our 5th IUI cycle (our RE does 2 per cycle). The first 3 were with clomid and the next 2 were with injectables. The procedure itself is pretty much painless, but as a previous poster mentioned, the 2ww is just endless...

Monica - IUI itself is covered by OHIP in Ontario (not sure which province you're in), but you have to pay for the sperm wash. Our RE charges $225/wash, and we do 2 IUIs per cycle, so it costs us $450 per cycle. As for the meds, it depends on the dosage you're on. For me, I did 150 iu of Puregon daily (known as Follistim in the USA) for 9 days. A 600 iu vial lasts me approx. 4 days, and costs $695. Our last cycle (the one that worked, but we ultimately lost the baby at 19w5d due to PPROM) cost about $2500 (sperm washes, puregon, HCG trigger and progesterone suppositories) - fortunately, my work insurance covers all medications, so all we pay for are the sperm washes. The cycle monitoring (u/s, bloodwork and doctor visits) is covered by OHIP (and I think it's the same for all other provinces, but I could be wrong). Feel free to PM me if you have any further questions. We'll be starting Puregon & IUI again in late March.

Have a 5 year old daughter. Misscarried twins at 4 months about 2 years ago. My cycles are irregular. Tried clomid for 7 months due to one test that showed my levels were low. Last clomid cycle was in August. Made me feel fat and witchie as well as decline in mucus. Husband's test showed low count and mobility but could have been due to tight undies, caffine, and chewing tobacco. We have done away with all three. Trying on our own since then decided to try IUI today, without clomid. doctor thinks levels are good without it. Wondering that if this is not successful if we should go back on clomid before next IUI. Thanks to everyone for sharing and baby dust to all. Any thoughts on how to prepare for today?

Good luck girls ;D

Lendy, so good to hear from you. IUI did not work for us, but we have some other issues that you guys don't have.

Like Rusty said, the procedure itself was no big deal, no worse for me than a Pap. We did three IUIs w/ Femera (produces only one egg, fewer s/e and does not thin mucous)and after that the dr said that rather than try IUI w/ injectables, knowing that we have MFI, he suggested we put that money towards a procedure with higher rates of success (IVF). We are working up to that ::) hopefully.

I'm just delighted that you all are still trying or are trying again or whatever. ;D

Good luck and welcome Jelly. I'm so sorry for your losses. :'( We lost our fourth baby at 18 weeks four years ago as well. I'm just know picking up the pieces.

I hope things improve w/ DH. I'm sure they told you that it takes three moths for sperm to regenerate so hang in there.

Lendy, I'm on my 5th IUI and I'm hoping it worked this time (I'll find out Thurs. or Fri.) I was told there's a 74% success rate for 6 cycles. I have a friend who got pregnant on her first try. Good luck!
